I think the idea was that Folk and Punk are similar in structure, what with being based on the idea of "three chords and the truth".
The phonautograph was a sound recording device invented in the 1860s. Things that were recorded with it could not be played back until about 10 years ago with the advent of digital means. I have heard these recordings myself and, while extremely scratchy, it's amazing to hear recordings that were made over 150 years ago.
In regard to the Rutherford Hayes line: the election of 1876 (the election that made Hayes president) was a widely disputed one, resulting in accusations of voter fraud and that Hayes stole the election. History repeats itself over and over again, doesn't it?
lyrics
Verse 1:
I'm just a punk who got old
So I play acoustic guitars
I wait to take my vitamins
Screw rhymes, I'm gonna break my hip
Chorus:
Three chords and the truth
Is all I've ever known
I put on my black hat
For the punk rock rest home
Verse 2:
Liberty spikes are turning gray
Tongue stud in an antique show
Killing Joke shirt's been fossilized
Will Fugazi make music again?
Chorus
Verse 3:
I put the folk in "old folks"
I don't keep myself current
My LP's on phonautograph
Rutherford Hayes is a fraud
